Cantwell Cliffs, in Hocking Hills State Park, is unlike much of the Midwest landscape and feels more like hiking into Central America than Ohio. While we were amazed at the moss covered walls of other gorge trails, Cantwell Cliffs transported our minds even further afield. Maybe Tolkien’s Middle Earth would be a more apt comparison. Clambering over crumbling stone steps, squeezing through passages, and sometimes losing the trail in the undergrowth. Cantwell Cliffs is a challenging, but beautiful trail.

Located in Ohio’s Hocking Hills State Park, the Cedar Falls trail is perfect for an easy hike. Less than a mile round trip, and without steep elevation changes, it provides a good combination of exercise and sight seeing. Visitors are rewarded with a picturesque waterfall at the end of the trail.

Ash Cave is one of the shortest trails in Ohio’s Hocking Hills State Park and perfect for families. It is also wheelchair accessible, providing a paved path right up to the cave so all visitors can enjoy the beauty.

Easily the most popular trail in Ohio’s Hocking Hills State Park, Old Man’s Cave consists of roughly one mile of winding paths along the stream in the gorge and to views of several waterfalls. The new visitor center is a good stop for info on the area and features some interactive exhibits for kids and modern bathrooms.

Located in Ohio’s Hocking Hills State Park, the Rock House hiking trail is stands apart for it’s unique sandstone cavern formation. At less than a mile, and with only a few inclines and stairs, the Rock House trail is a relatively easy trail for all ages and skill levels. The cavern itself is a natural wonder and the ‘windows’ offer scenic views from well above the bottom of the gorge.
