On an unseasonably warm Fall night in Sandusky, Ohio, I took the opportunity to wander about the downtown with my camera for some after dark photography. Night time lends a whole new perspective to many towns and tourist destinations. It also presents a new challenge to practice a different set of photography skills. For many of the pictures in this series I used a 10-stop Neutral Density filter and tripod with exposure times of 15 to 30 seconds. Click on the photos for larger images and more detail.
I was staying at the Hotel Kilbourne, so my photo walk started with a stroll around the harbor front. Most of the area was torn up as they are reworking the street and sidewalks, plus adding a new public park to one of the wharves. Work boats returning for the night grabbed my interest.
Once the sun set, I headed into the center of downtown Sandusky to photograph the Boy with the Boot fountain and old City Hall. There are several spot lights around the fountain, which was challenging. I loved to a few different locations for better city hall pictures.
Thanks for following along. I’m open to photography tips and suggestions of what you would like to see more of on the website and YouTube videos. For a little different scenery, check out my first after dark photo walk from Frankenmuth, Michigan.
