Today’s virtual excursion takes us to Kurile Lake located in the Kamchatka peninsula in far eastern Russia. The 29 square mile lake fills an old volcanic caldera. The lake is within a protected natural area and contains the largest sockeye salmon stocks in Asia. Thanks to the abundance of salmon, the area also sports a very high density of brown bears, which we see in the image catching an easy meal.
