Packing cubes. Several of my fellow travelers swear by them, yet I’ve never jumped on that wagon. Chalk it up to routine. I’ve been packing for vacations with the same skills I learned in Cub Scouts and on camping trips. Recently, TravelWise sent me a set of packing cubes to review and I must admit my travel habits have now changed. Packing and luggage handling are now both easier.
Disclosure: TravelWise provided me with a set of packing cubes for review. Opinions, as always, are purely my own. This post may contain links from a trusted partner. Thank you for supporting Wagon Pilot Adventures.
Just what are packing cubes?
For those not in the know, the cubes are basically small zippered bags to help you create compartments in your suitcase. The cubes make it easy to organize your clothes, and other items, for easy retrieval when needed. As I’ve discovered, it makes a lot more sense than stuffing everything into a large suitcase and leaving it to chance that baggage handling won’t undo all your organization efforts.
The TravelWise packing cubes come as a set of five. Two large, two medium, and one small. They are made of lightweight and durable nylon with two zippers. There is a mesh panel on the top of each bag so you can see the contents and allow air circulation. Each packing cube has a carry handle, so they can be used on their own and not just in a suitcase. The bags are hand wash only, but the nylon dries quickly.
The large bags will fit multiple pairs of adult size pants, dresses, and shirts. The medium are roomy enough to pack a child’s outfit plus extras. This can come in handy for sorting out kids’ clothing for each day while on vacation to speed up the morning routine. The small bag works well as a toiletries pouch or for small items. The sizes and flexibility means you can pack by either folding or rolling methods.
I tested out a set while on two recent road trips and was surprised how much easier it made packing and unpacking. I often stay at multiple hotels on road trips and the packing cubes came in handy. I had packed my shorts in a large cube, t-shirts and button ups in medium cubes, and rolled all my socks and underwear into the small cube. I was able to use a rolling duffel style suitcase and the cubes kept everything organized. I realized on my last trip that a large packing cube was enough to use as an overnight bag for quick stops and could still be stored in my suitcase until needed.
Packing Cubes are Perfect for Kids
My daughter also received a set of the now hot pink TravelWise packing cubes. They are even more useful for stowing kids’ belongings. As mentioned before, daily outfits can be sorted into separate bags; saving time and preventing kids from pulling everything out of their suitcase. Her carry on suitcase fit one large and two medium cubes perfectly with some room left over. Packing cubes are a great tool for teaching kids how to pack for a trip. They can sort items into daily packs or separate by clothing type.
Packing Cubes Offer Versatility
Packing cubes are versatile for many styles of travel or even home use. Here are a few ideas:
- Easy to unpack at the hotel, just pull cubes out of suitcase and put them into the drawers. Perfect on long road trips with multiple destinations.
- Great for air travelers to keep items on hand; easy TSA screening.
- Packing cubes are flexible, so work well with backpacks, duffels, and storage containers.
- Perfect for stowing snacks, kids’ toys, or other supplies on road trips.
- The packing cubes have handles, making them good for use on their own when you need a quick change of clothes. Such as a sleepover, going to the pool, camping.
- Organize supplies for camping or your RV, to keep neat and organized.
The TravelWise packing cubes come in a wide variety of colors. Currently there are eight available, ranging from black to bright pink. The set of five cubes in three sizes is versatile. Pricing is in line or a bit cheaper than other comparable packing cubes on the market. TravelWise packing cubes are available for purchase here on Amazon.
I packed all my clothes for 8 days in a large packing cube for my recent trip to Europe. I rolled it all up and was amazed at how well it fit. It made hotel packing and unpacking a breeze. I’m sold on packing cubes and will be using them from now on.
Yeah, I’ve really never understood packing cubes. But those pink ones sure are cute! 🙂 Maybe I need to give them another go and keep an open mind…
I have never used these before, but can completely see how incredibly versatile they are. I will have to look at getting a set!
