Sandusky is a popular destination in northwest Ohio for both families and young adults. Here you’ll find the amazing Cedar Point amusement park along with the Sports Force youth team sports complex and an up and coming downtown scene. I arrived in town early for a press trip and chose the Fairfield Inn & Suites for its location on the main route coming in from the Ohio Turnpike. It’s a good location for families looking to spend a few days in the area and close to both activities and amenities. Cedar Point is roughly 8 miles away and the Kalahari water park is nearby.

The Fairfield Inn was recently renovated (2017) and could easily be mistaken for a new hotel. It is a typical highway exit type hotel with 2 stories, 75 rooms and 12 suites. Accessible rooms are available. Pets are not allowed, except for service animals. Parking is easy and several restaurants and stores are just down the road. The hotel is at the edge of the developed area and set back from the road a bit, so not too much noise from traffic.

 

Hotel Amenities

Pool – Indoors, heated. Average size, several lounge chairs.

Free WiFi – Worked well both in lobby and in room.

Free breakfast – Excellent selection and staff kept everything filled. Separate coffee station next to dining area.

Free parking – Close to building and plenty of space.

Exercise room – Didn’t have a chance to check it out.

Lobby has little corner space to relax with nice modern décor. There is also an open business desk area to use in the lobby.

 

Hotel Rooms

I chose a room with a single King size bed and couch for this stay. There was a lot of room to stretch out and get some work done. There was an average size desk, but I enjoyed using the two small tables and relaxing on the couch. A room with two queen beds would still have a decent amount of room for a family.

The room was decorated in shades of blue and tan, which was relaxing and helped amplify the day light. A single server coffee/tea maker and a mini fridge are located next to the desk. The bed was comfortable with lots of pillows. I had a street view room and didn’t notice much road noise.

The bathroom was OK. Average size shower/tub. As per usual, the shower head was a bit low for 6 foot me, but the water pressure was excellent and included a massage setting. The sink and mirror are located outside the bathroom. It works well for 1-2 people, but a family will find the counter too small. There are suites available, which do have a full length vanity counter, but still only one sink.

 

Hotel Dining

The Fairfield Inn offers free breakfast service. The selection was better than average and the staff kept everything topped off. There are plenty of tables, though it may get a bit crowded during peak summer season with lots of kids around. The coffee station is located just outside of the dining area, which makes it easy to pop over there and not have to stand in the food line if it is busy. A small snack/drink store is located in the corner near the front desk if you need a quick bite at other times of day.

 

Hotel Staff and Maintenance

The staff was very friendly and helpful when asked about finding a place for dinner. The hotel lobby, hallways, and laundry room were clean. Landscaping was minimal, but well kept. The Fairfield was recently refurbished and looked like a newer hotel; quality work.

 

Hotel Recommendation

I was impressed with the Fairfield Inn. It was clean, well maintained, and the staff was professional. More importantly, the room was comfortable and quiet. The location is perfect for any Sandusky adventure; located on the main road coming in from the Turnpike, but still on the edge of the developed area. Value-wise, the price was comparable to the other quality hotels in the area and I’d give it an extra bump for location. I would recommend the Fairfield Inn for business travelers, couples, and families visiting the area. A great all around hotel with multiple room size options.
